Fried Green Tomatoes

3/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
4 or 5 medium sized green tomatoes, sliced thickly
Stir together dry ingredients in a bowl. Make a well in the center. Beat the egg and combine with the milk. Slowly add to the flour mixture, whisking until just combined.

Cut your veggies into 1/2 in. or so slices. Heat about 1/2 in. oil in a frying pan. Dip veggies in batter, and fry for a minute or so per side; drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

This is great for taking care of those green tomatoes hanging around after the first frost.
