4 slices ham, for sandwiches
4 slices bread; homemade white is my favorite
6 slices swiss cheese
-----Sauce-------
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 tsp. ground mustard
salt & pepper to taste
Place the butter or margarine in a small saucepan and melt. Add the flour and stir to make a paste.
Stir in the milk in small parts. Add the mustard, salt and pepper to taste as the sauce starts
to get thick. If you have a problem with lumps, run the sauce through your blender.
To assemble the sandwiches: First, toast two pieces of bread golden brown in a toaster. Spread a small amount of sauce onto each bread slice. Place a piece of ham on top, and a piece of cheese on top of that. Then put another layer of sauce on and repeat until only two cheese slices remain. Place the sandwiches (without the top bread slices) under a broiler until the cheese is melting. Toast the top slices of bread in a toaster. Place them on top of the sandwiches. Spread some sauce on the top of the sandwich and place the last slices of cheese on that. Put the sandwiches back under the broiler until the tops are melty. Serve warm. Makes sandwiches for two. |
